Description

A declaration of boundless creative genius by Gaudí, Casa Batlló is an absolute testimony to his architectural vision. From the exterior, there are innumerable intricate details that can be correlated with organic forms and abstract ones. The facade is ornamented with a mosaic effect created by colored and ceramic tile pieces called trencadís, which simulate the dragon scale-a favorite theme frequently repeated in Gaudi's works. This material serves another purpose: not only does it provide interest to the visual display, it also reflects brilliant light to make it appear alive throughout the day in different ambiances of lighting conditions.

And the interior of Casa Batlló does not disappoint in its drama. The whole house is introduced into the grand staircase, which floats and leads to levels. Each corner of every room is designed for perfection, with curved walls and ceilings, and multifaceted stained-glass windows, which project kaleidoscopic patterns over the floors. The central courtyard lights the heart of the house at the top, where the skylight illuminates almost all parts of the house.

The highly noticeable thing about Casa Batlló is the way organic shapes and forms feature in it. Gaudí got much of his inspiration from the natural world around, whether it was a tree branch, bone of an animal, or shape of a shell, and brought that influence into his work. He brought this idea forward through the flowing lines of the handrails, through the arched doorways, and even the furniture that complemented this sense of vigor within the respective space.

Today, Casa Batlló is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and continues to be one of the most iconic monuments of Barcelona that attract millions of visitors every year.
