Description
Welcome to the first known museum in the whole world! The Capitoline Museums, a collection spread across four historic buildings on one of Rome’s famed Seven Hills, offer a captivating array of art and relics that weave the rich tapestry of Rome’s past.
Founded by Pope Clement XII in 1734, this museum was established to showcase a significant assembly of ancient sculptures and artworks for public viewing, marking the creation of the first museum ever. Perched atop a hill overlooking the Ancient Roman Forum, this site is a historic treasure trove.
Explore iconic pieces such as the renowned she-wolf statue, which depicts the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, and delve into a collection that vividly narrates the epic saga of Rome, the ancient "Caput Mundi" (Capital of the World).
