In the early 20th century, the forward-thinking architect Domènech i Montaner created a groundbreaking design. On the grounds of an old medieval hospital, he created a contemporary medical facility that would offer patients excellent care and an environment of architectural beauty. Thus he was pretending to aid the recovery. This concept was pioneering at the time and remains innovative today.

The hospital consists of 16 pavilions connected by underground tunnels and showcases a unique style characterized by vibrant mosaic art, colorful roof tiles, intricate arches, and whimsical lines, all characteristic of the Catalan Modernisme. The courtyards, gardens, and trees underscore Montaner’s belief that the natural environment could contribute to patients' healing more effectively than a traditionally sterile setting.
