Camp Nou is the emblematic stadium of the legendary Football Club Barcelona, also known as Barca. Origins of FC Barcelona and the Construction of Camp Nou

Spotify Camp Nou was built and inaugurated in 1957 to replace the first home stadium of the world-famous football club Barcelona. Located in the Sants district, 30-minute drive from the centre of Barcelona, this first stadium could accommodate up to 48.000 spectators and badly needed to grow as the football club was gaining popularity.

Camp Nou was designed for 93,00 people, but its capacity increased to 120,00 in 1982 because of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Later, due to the new regulations, the standing area had to be replaced by seats, thus reducing the capacity once again to 99,000 spectators. With all those changes, the stadium got a five-star rating from UEFA and later was classified with the UEFA's highest distinction, "elite stadium."

The new stadium was planned to be named after the club's founder, Joan Gamper. The administration chose a more neutral name, "Estadio del Club de Fútbol Barcelona," but the field was always popularly known as the Camp Nou (new field), in reference to the old Les Corts field. This is why, in 2001, Camp Nou was ratified as the official name of the stadium.

FC Barcelona's History at Camp Nou Key Moments

The first match played in the stadium was between Barcelona and a team of Warsaw players. The game ended with a Barcelona victory by 4-2. The first goal of this match, and therefore the first goal in the history of Camp Nou, was scored by Barcelona's player Eulogio Martínez.

The first La Liga match occurred on October 6, 1957. In this case, Barca played against Real Jaen. The locals won the game, scoring 6-1.

Another memorable match was played in the stadium on November 29, 2010. Barcelona won 5 to 0 against Real Madrid.

One of the most remarkable matches in football history was the famous "remontada" against PSG in 2017. Barcelona defeated Paris-Saint-Germain 6 to 1.

The Recent Transformation into Spotify Camp Nou

In 2022, Spotify signed a sponsorship agreement with FC Barcelona. Spotify paid €250 million, and the stadium was officially renamed Spotify Camp Nou on July 1, 2022.

In 2023, the club proposed rebuilding Camp Nou to increase its capacity to 105,000. The newly rebuilt stadium will open in 2026 with a covered roof of 30,000 m² of solar panels. Outside of the stadium, a hotel, offices, an ice rink, and the new Palau Blaugrana basketball field will also be built. The cost is around 900 million euros.

The stadium is closed for reconstruction, and all the male team FC Barcelona matches are played at the Olympic stadium Lluis Companys.
